National Parks Bucket List: 5 Spring Hikes in Death Valley for New Hikers
Death Valley feels big.
Spring is a smart time to go. Days are often cooler than summer. You can get great views with short walks.
This guide is for new hikers. Each pick is a few hours or less. Each one has a clear start spot.
Two safety notes to read first
1. Do not hike in a canyon if rain is likely.
The park warns that flash floods can rush through canyons and washes. They can hit fast.
2. Heat can hurt you, even on “easy” walks.
The park has had rescues in the dunes from foot burns. So wear real shoes. Bring water. Start early.
1) Badwater Basin Salt Flats (easy)
Badwater Basin is a must‑see.
From the lot, you can step onto the flats on an easy path. If you want the best “salt tile” views, the park suggests an easy 1.5 to 2 mile round‑trip walk out onto the flats.
Good for: first timers, kids, and photo stops.
Main tip: go early for cooler air and soft light.
2) Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes (easy to hard, based on distance)
Sand dunes are fun. They also take effort.
The park lists a 2‑mile round‑trip out‑and‑back option. It also lists about 1.5 hours for that hike.
Good for: sunrise walks and star nights.
Main tip: wear closed shoes. Sand can burn.
3) Golden Canyon + Red Cathedral spur (medium)
Golden Canyon gives you classic Death Valley rock.
The park lists the Gower Gulch Loop at 4.3 miles. It also notes that the Red Cathedral spur adds about 1 mile round trip.
The park also notes a paved lot and a vault toilet at the trailhead.
Good for: your first “real” hike in the park.
Main tip: keep snacks handy. The return can feel long.
4) Ubehebe Crater rim walk (medium)
Ubehebe Crater is huge.
The park says the rim walk is about 1.5 miles round trip. It also warns that the rim is loose and can be unsafe. Stay on the trail.
Good for: big views with a short walk.
Main tip: wind is common. Bring a shell.
5) Mosaic Canyon (harder, but worth it)
Mosaic Canyon is beautiful. It is also a step up.
The park lists it as 4 miles out and back. It lists 1,200 feet of gain. It lists 2.5 to 3 hours.
Good for: strong hikers who want a challenge.
Main tip: start early. Skip it if rain is in the area.
